Hooray Hooray, oh I know that was corny but as someone who fights for American worker’s opportunities, today is a great day!
President Trump signed an Executive Order which blocked the most popular foreign work VISAS from being issued. The order applies to H-1B visas, H-2B visas, H-4 visas, L-1 visas, and certain J-1 visas which cover tech, educational, farming, and other seasonal jobs.
From The Hill
President Trump on Monday signed an executive order to suspend the issuance of certain temporary worker visas through the end of 2020, cracking down further on immigration after signing a more narrow measure in April.
It is the latest effort by the Trump administration to satisfy immigration hawks and groups that argue American workers should be prioritized, especially amid the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The restrictions are set to remain in place for the rest of the calendar year and can be extended.
A senior administration official said the visa restrictions would free up more than half a million jobs for workers already in the country. However, many companies are laying off workers due to the pandemic, and economic experts have acknowledged some of those jobs may not return.
The H1B VISA has long been a point of contention for many US displaced tech workers. Silicon Valley has brought in over 200K STEM workers from countries such as China and India. They typically work for lower wages and with no long term benefits. In addition, large corporations like Disney, have started requiring their US long term employees to train foreigners to eventually take their jobs. Talk about anti-American, especially at the “Happiest Place On Earth”.
U.S. companies are forcing workers to train their own foreign replacements
Opponents of job outsourcing are making a holiday-season appeal to President Trump: Stop U.S. companies from forcing American workers to train the very same cheaper foreign laborers who will soon replace them.
Why it matters: Trump promised voters he’d end abuses of worker visa programs and save U.S. jobs — but as he campaigns for re-election, advocates say he hasn’t done enough.
Driving the news: AT&T is poised to send thousands into the new year hunting for new jobs after assigning them to train their own foreign replacements, according to conversations with current and former workers and documents obtained by Axios.
- Many have worked for the company for over a decade. They aren’t being offered severance or early retirement, and may not easily find a comparable job elsewhere with similar pay.
There are dozens of more companies involved in converting their American workforce to foreign workers on the H1B VISAS.
Today’s Executive Order may be only a band-aid to the immigration problem, for at least the next 6 months, American tech workers will be first. Hopefully, it sticks for our nation and US tech workers’ sakes.
