On June 16th, Lincoln County health officials announced residents must wear face coverings in public settings where they may come within six feet of another individual who is not from the same household. Not unusual during the lagging COVID-19 pandemic re-opening.
What is unusual, is there is an exemption for every person of color, to not wear the masks. So in effect, it only applies to people who have white skin. So much for equal treatment under the law. The left wants to say, we must all wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 which could kill the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, but not crucial if you are a person of color. Does the virus change when transferred from a person of color to a high-risk candidate?
From New York Post
“Oregon county issues face mask order that exempts non-white people
Health officials announced last week residents must wear face coverings in public settings where they may come within six feet of another individual who is not from the same household.
But people of color do not have to follow the new rule if they have “heightened concerns about racial profiling and harassment” over wearing the masks, officials said.”
“No person shall intimidate or harass people who do not comply,” health officials said.”
I am sympathetic towards anyone who has experienced racism, but if COVID-19 is killing a lot of people, what should have the priority? People’s comfort level or preventing the spread of a deadly virus?
The article continues
“With mask requirements becoming more common, activists have raised concerns that the directives could put non-white people in danger.
“For many black people, deciding whether or not to wear a bandanna in public to protect themselves and others from contracting coronavirus is a lose-lose situation that can result in life-threatening consequences either way,” ReNika Moore, director of the ACLU’s Racial Justice Program, told CNN.”
This boils down to a conflict between two movements in the USA. The pro lockdown, masks crucial to saving millions of at-risk Americans and the Black Lives Matter pressures on our culture to treat people of color differently. One says without masks many black Americans might die, the others say not wearing masks is crucial in preventing racism and possible violence from the police, etc. as a result of their biases.
How do we move forward, surly not requiring one group to wear masks when the rest of the culture is not? Political correctness always looks unAmerican, when open for all to see.
