New York City, “The Big Apple”, with its booming skyscrapers, hustling Manhatten, thriving stock market, and absurdly high real estate. In the past few decades, NYC has enjoyed its revitalized reputation as a safe, clean, and exciting place to live and visit.
Unfortunately, a growing storm is coming, strong like the small grey cloud Moses saw over the Red Sea, eventually growing powerful enough to separate the waters. The NYC storm is the result of a series of terrible policies enacted by progressive mayors, Mike Bloomberg, and current occupant, Bill de Blasio, who have turned NYC back towards a path similar to their crime-ridden, dirty, and rudderless 80 – 90s decades they so badly fought to escape.
How did NYC previously turn it around back then?
From City- Journal (2009)
“Just 20 years ago, New York City was racked with crime: murders, burglaries, drug deals, car thefts, thefts from cars. (Remember the signs in car windows advising no radio?) Unlike many cities’ crime problems, New York’s were not limited to a few inner-city neighborhoods that could be avoided.”
“Better than any other politician, Rudy Giuliani understood the pent-up demand for public order and built his successful 1993 run for mayor on quality-of-life themes. Once in office, he appointed William Bratton, who had orchestrated the subway success and understood the importance of order maintenance, as New York’s police commissioner.”
“Under Bratton, the NYPD brought enormous capacities to bear on the city’s crime problem—particularly Compstat, its tactical planning and accountability system, which identified where crimes were occurring and held local commanders responsible for their areas. Giuliani and Bratton also gave the force’s members a clear vision of the “business” of the NYPD and how their activities contributed to it. In short, a theory previously advocated largely by elites filtered down to—and inspired—line police officers, who had constituted a largely ignored and underused capacity.”
From PJ Media
“David Dinkins’ New York was a crime-ridden hole in need of a Batman to clean it up. That’s when New York suffered six murders a day. Rudy Guiliani’s New York was clean, prosperous, and safe. Policing “broken windows,” and the context of a nation fed up with worsening crime, brought violent crime in New York and across the country under greater control. The FBI says violent crime declined 51% between 1993 and 2018. That decline was no accident. It took a nation stirred to fight it, and the Democrats essentially pushing aside their chaotic left fringe. Such an action today invites cancelation.”
NYC focused on the small things, holding its citizens more accountable, who then saw order returning, which freed up capital for re-building Manhattan, (Donald Trump), and NYC was back.
Unfortunately, the same leftist policies are failings again.
The New York Post’s Nicole Gelinas reports that after decades of Big Apple violent crime declining and staying flat, it’s going the wrong way fast.
“New York’s murder rate more than doubled, to 42 murders, from 18 the year before — a jolt of 133 percent. Shooting victims, including wounded, are up 45 percent. Stabbings are up, too.”
“For the year, murder is up 25 percent. If these rates hold, New York would end 2020 with an increase in murders twice as high as we’ve seen since 1990.”
New York City is losing population, losing it’s safety and considering de-funding it’s police force. With progressives like AOC, who chased Amazon’s new multi-billion dollar campus away, the future looks bleak from The Big Apple, which might, in the end, be destroyed by a few rotten apples in the city.
