Two women are facing hate crime charges after a video shows them confronting a 7-year-old boy and his mother outside the Democratic National Convention in Delaware over their support of President Donald Trump and seizing a “Make America Great Again” hat.
A grand jury on Tuesday indicted 21-year-old Olivia Winslow and 21-year-old Camryn Amy on felony charges of robbery, conspiracy and committing a hate crime, and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
According to a statement by the Department of Justice:
“Violence in any form is unacceptable, but harming another person — let alone a child — because of the expression of their views betrays the principles on which our country was founded,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “Free speech, free assembly, and free expression are sacred, no matter whether we agree with the opinions expressed, and especially when we don’t. That is as true today as it was when the Bill of Rights was ratified. Our Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust will continue to defend everyone’s fundamental rights.”
The DOJ clarified each committed or attempted to commit the crimes of robbery, assault, and endangering the welfare of a child with the purpose of interfering with the victim’s free exercise or enjoyment of any right, privilege, or immunity protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, or because the victim had “exercised or enjoyed said right or rights.”
Each woman has been charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, and endangering the welfare of a child. Amy was additionally charged with third-degree assault, third-degree attempted assault, and offensive touching.”
A video of the assault went viral and was retweeted by President Donald J. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr.
In a video posted on social media, Winslow and Amy were seen damaging signs and taking a red MAGA hat from a group of Trump supporters protesting the nomination of former Vice President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for president.
A young boy in the video can be heard saying, “That’s somebody else’s hat,” after Winslow appears to pick it up off the ground and throws it.
“Call 911,” the boy says to his mother as the two women walk away with the hat.
Later in the video, a man attempting to get the hat back appears to be punched by the second suspect, who later throws the hat over a fence.
Video of the confrontation, posted by Students for Trump on Twitter, has been viewed millions of times and was shared by Trump’s son Donald Jr.
Winslow and Amy were arrested shortly after the incident. Wilmington police said they identified the two after reviewing the video footage.
One question remains, where is the left to defend the way these young women were indoctrinated to hate President Trump’s agenda and supporters so much that they would attack a child?
