Not counting Justice John Roberts, the United States Supreme court now has a Constitutional Majority, for the first time in many years with the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett, handing President Donald J. Trump a major victory.
Justice Clarence Thomas was the first to swear Justice Barrett in, and the two share a mutual friendship with former Justice Antonin Scalia.
Thomas has long been considered one of the more conservative justices on the Court, along with Barrett’s mentor, the late Justice Antonin Scalia. The would-be celebration of her confirmation won’t be a large affair, President Trump said, noting that it will be “just a very nice event.”
WATCH REMARKS HERE:
Trump made those comments to reporters on Monday at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania, Politico reported. The president has been holding rallies in the swing state as part of a final push to win support for next week’s election.
Fox News reported,”Barrett’s confirmation, which is expected to take place on Monday evening, will mark his third successful appointment to the high court within his first term. The highly contentious process has provoked backlash from Democrats, who claim Republicans hypocritically jammed her nomination through after rejecting Judge Merrick Garland’s in 2016. “
The Democrats in the Senate were very upset, threatening “consequences”, which is what Democrat Richard Blumenthal said during the debate period on Monday.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will swear in Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the nation’s highest court at the White House Monday evening following her confirmation, according to a report.
“Justice Clarence Thomas will administer the official Constitutional Oath to Judge Amy Coney Barrett at the White House tonight,” one White House aide told the Washington Times.
The vote was 52 votes for confirmation.
Mollie Hemmingway of The Federalist wrote about the final count, “Legitimacy does not flow from their feelings,” says McConnell of Democrats’ efforts. Notes that Dems are behaving as they accuse Trump of — that Trump won’t accept outcomes he doesn’t like. ‘Well they’re flunking that test’ right now.”
“Any political system that sets them back” is not illegitimate, McConnell says. References Senate Dems’ overt threat that justices must rule in the way they like or face restructuring.(FWIW, that threat worked on Roberts.)
Chris Stigall reminded readers that the Democrat Party created the situation that they find themselves in, with past actions by Democrats.
