Sir George Ivan Morrison is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and record producer and he will release his 43rd studio album, made up of 28 songs that he wrote and produced while under lockdown from COVID. This Week Morrison released a single from the album, It’s Only A Song.
“I’m not telling people what to do or think, the government is doing a great job of that already. It’s about freedom of choice, I believe people should have the right to think for themselves,” Van Morrison said earlier in the year about the lockdown, which he is not a fan of.
During his battle against lockdown measures, he clashed with pro-lock-down promoters. His revenge?
He released a pointed song:
No more lockdown
No more government overreach
No more fascist police
Disturbing our peace
No more taking our freedom
And our God-given rights
Pretending it’s for our safety
When it’s really to enslave
SOUNDTRACK TO HIS VICTORY LAP
Van Morrison, who was not happy about the lockdown or the restrictions on live performances, released a single from his newest album, Latest Record Project: Volume 1, on Thursday.
The song opens with some beautiful smooth jazzy Morrison upbeat sounds, the official video is a backdrop of vibrant shades of Orange, a very happy color, with bouncing and floating polka dots and shapes.
He did it, he beat the winter blues and the lockdown frustrations and released a beautiful, poetic, lighthearted song.
Only a song, it’s not set in stone, it’s only a song
It’s only a poem that could change in the long run, it’s only a song
It’s what I said then just to make it rhyme
Could have been on my mind at the time
Putting paper to pen, it’s only a song, it’s only a song
Could be back to front just to get it to work, it’s only a song
Get it to jump, get it to swing, so I can sing it
Only a song when everything’s said and done
At the end of the day in the warmth of the sun
It’s only a song in the wintry snow (ooh)
When the penguins march along and go home (ooh)
It’s only a song<
Only a song when everything’s said and done
At the end of the day in the warmth of the sun
It’s only a song in the wintry snow (ooh)
When the penguins march along and go home (ooh)
It’s only a song
“It’s got the sound and spirit of a classic Van Morrison song and single: upbeat, swinging and cool. He merges purity and passion with R&B, rock and roll, blues and whimsy, resulting in a song that is essentially Van, a story told in real-time soul by one of the greatest of the greats,” reported American Songwriter.com.
The lyric is songwriter-oriented more directly than most songs, based on this minimization of the impact and meaning of any one song:
It‘s only a song,
It’s not set in stone,
It’s only a song
