On Wednesday night, President Joe Biden during his first speech to a joint session of Congress urged the legislature to reissue a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines while arguing that it “worked before.”
Unfortunately for the president, there are extensively sourced data that proves it in no way ever worked before. It was a lie.
The use of the term “assault weapons” is also disingenuous. They use that term because they want people to think they are weapons of war, or they want to remind them that they kill people while leaving out that they also save lives.
Biden said, “In the 1990s, we passed universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that hold 100 rounds that can be fired in seconds,” after he declared gun violence “an epidemic in America.”
Can the government tell us how many people are going around shooting people and committing crimes using 100 round magazines? Would you believe this government if they told you?
“Talk to most responsible gun owners, most hunters, they’ll tell you there’s no justification for having 100 rounds, 100 bullets, in a weapon.”
The only response to that it’s none of your business, Joe. Because it isn’t and the Second Amendment says so.
The assault weapons ban Biden was talking about was called the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, referred to simply as “the colossal failure,” was passed as part of a bigger piece of legislation called the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 under President Bill Clinton.
Some of the provisions in the bill unconstitutionally banned the transfer or even the possession of “ammunition feeding devices” that held more than 10 rounds, so Biden’s claim it banned 100 round magazines was another lie. It also banned the manufacturing of 18 models of semiautomatic weapons.
“We need a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines again,” Biden told Congress and the American people on Wednesday. “Don’t tell me it can’t be done. We’ve done it before … and it worked.” More lies by Biden.
Can I take this time to mention that in April 1999 the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado was not stopped by the 1994 assault weapons ban? Neither was the Heritage High School shooting in Georgia that left twelve people dead.
Weapons bans do not work because only law-abiding people follow the law. They are not the ones who go around shooting people. The gun grabber’s narrative is that anyone who owns a gun could at any time go berserk and start a shooting rampage, killing hordes of people. It’s absurd.
The 1994 assault weapons ban was set to sunset in ten years and the FBI counseled Congress to let it go because after ten years they saw no effect on crime. Conservatives said that it wouldn’t work ten years prior.
A study called “An Updated Assessment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban: Impacts on Gun Markets and Gun Violence, 1994-2003” was funded by the DOJ that found that though gun violence fell by 17% nationwide during the ten-year ban, the drop had nothing to do with the ban. Now Biden and his ilk are trying to say it did.
The reasoning behind the drop in gun violence was common sense, something lacking in Washington, DC. They measured gun violence for the assault weapons ban by crimes committed with rifles, but the majority of crimes committed in the United States are done using handguns.
“Assault weapons were used in only a small fraction of gun crimes prior to the ban: about 2% according to most studies and no more than 8%.”
While the study cited that there was a decrease in crimes using so-called assault weapons, they noted that it appears that criminals just started using handguns instead. Thus the drop in assault weapon crimes.
“The decline in use [of assault weapons] was offset throughout at least the last 1990s by steady or rising use of other guns equipped with [large capacity magazines] in jurisdictions studied,” the authors wrote.
The study then said, “We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence.”
So then why do Democrats continually say that the ban worked? They know that most crimes are committed using handguns, and they also know that if they tried to ban handguns they might have a revolution on their hands. So, they are employing the use of incrementalism to condition Americans into thinking it’s a good idea to ban handguns. The way it works is the Democrats will push through a ban on certain rifles they label as assault weapons. Over time, no matter what happens, the Democrats will tell you that the ban worked. Once the idea of the government being able to ban guns in America sinks in that’s when they will start to attack handguns.
