A historic courthouse in Georgetown, Delaware has had a whipping post outside of it for God only knows how long. On Wednesday, the post was removed from the grounds after complaints from activists were lodged wanting to deal with its racist history.
The removal, which comes as protests have erupted across the country over racism and police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd, was carried out by the state’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, reported by Delaware State News. The whipping post was considered the last of its kind in the United States.
Delaware was the last state to outlaw whipping as a punishment in 1952. To be fair, white and black defendants were sentenced to be whipped over the years, but the sentences were disproportionately carried out against black defendants.
I have a question you won’t hear by the Fake News networks. Delaware has been Joe Biden’s home state since forever, so how come as a powerful and influential US senator, first elected in 1973, and was elected Vice President of the United States in 2009, how come after 48 years of being a politician, representing his home state of Delaware, how come he never once addressed removing the post?
And now we’re supposed to believe he’ll finally do the right thing for racial harmony if elected president? Please…
In 2006, Joe Biden bragged about his state being a slave state answering a question about how a northern liberal like himself would do campaigning in the southern states against southern politicians like Mark Warner and John Edwards. Biden’s dopey response was to say, enthusiastically, that he would do fine in the south because Delaware was a slave state as if the south hadn’t already changed.
Bragging about being from a slave state from the perspective that you think it will help you among southern voters, in 2006, was considered abhorrent and repulsive to the majority of southern voters. This shows Biden was out of touch with the American for a very long time.
One activist told Delaware State News that neighborhood members had called for the post to be taken down and placed in a setting where it could be studied and understood in the proper historical context.
“That is the key. It’s not something we need to see every day,” Jane Hovington said. “It can be placed in a museum and if I so desire or anyone so desires, they can go and look at it. But it is not something that we should have to ride by and look at every day and constantly be reminded of the atrocities that so many of our forefathers had to endure.”
The post had stood on the grounds of the Old Sussex County Courthouse in Georgetown for many years. It’s unclear when it was first constructed, but you can be sure it was done by Democrats in power.
A state official said that it would be moved to storage.
“It is a state-owned artifact, itself a piece of state property. The Old Courthouse and grounds is state property,” said a spokesman with the Delaware Department of State. “So, we are just removing it from our property. It is going into storage with other historical artifacts, objects, basically the state’s collection.”
VIDEO OF THE DAYFacebook Finally Loses
Protests have been held in cities throughout the country in response to Floyd’s death after a video showed a white Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the unarmed black man’s neck for almost 9 minutes. The officer has since been fired charged with second-degree murder. Floyd’s death had universal condemnation across the country. Left and Right, Democrats and Republicans were all united in condemning the police’s actions and called for justice. And just was swift. All four cops involved were fired and subsequently charged. Derek Chauvin, the cop who kneeled on Floyd’s neck was ultimately charged with Second Degree Murder and the other three who stood by and didn’t to stop it were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
