Bill Maher Tells Twitter it ‘Failed’ on Free Speech and Needs ‘A New Sheriff’ [VIDEO]

Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” is a liberal. Sometimes he can anger conservatives because he insults them with his humor on issues that conservatives know he’s wrong. And then there are times when he is spot on and must piss off liberals. Those are the times I love the guy.

On Friday’s episode, Maher said that Twitter failed by making itself “the judge of what can go out there” and censoring things like the Hunter Biden laptop story and the conservative satire company The Babylon Bee. Maher believes the town square platform needs a new sheriff.

Maher said, “The argument to me is – has Twitter failed in setting up in the past as the judge of what can go out there? And I would say yes, you have. You failed when you threw The New York Post off of Twitter for talking about Hunter Biden’s emails and it turned out that was a real story. Did you read about this Babylon Bee? They got flagged for — they posted a funny video. This is funny to them, okay? ‘Sensitive content’ Twitter said, in the video, they were making fun of Twitter for being too sensitive. This is so through the looking glass. This is well within what satire has always been and the fact that they flagged this for being insensitive shows their complete lack of self-awareness about what their own problem is. If that’s where the line is, you have failed, Twitter. You do need a new sheriff.”

Maher comes down on leftists when they deserve it, which is why I have a healthy respect for him. Sure, I sometimes get angry when he joins the leftist mob, but you know, when he’s right, he’s right. And Maher is not afraid to say what he believes. He uses free speech in a way that is rare these days among liberals.

Free speech is one of the tools our Founders knew was crucial to maintain a free republic. Public discourse is where better ideas are born. Progressives started to believe that it just wasn’t worth it to debate ideas in public, probably because they always lose. So they went with the fascist approach of silencing any dissenting voices that oppose their ideology, or voices that come up with better solutions. In that vein, they didn’t expect the amount of blowback they received and they doubled down on their rhetoric and censorship to the point where a billionaire libertarian stepped in to remedy the situation when Elon Musk bought Twitter to make it a private company and turn it into a free speech hub.

Maher added, “Twitter became a left-wing place. It just did.” And added, “I think the North Star should be free speech.”

Censorship was the weapon of choice for the Left. With the decline in censorship, hope springs eternal for our society.
