On Thursday, a police investigation confirmed that the cause of death for a black man who was found hanging from a tree in a Southern California city park last month was in fact, sadly, a suicide.
Sheriff’s Commander Chris Marks explained that the investigation revealed that Mr. Fuller, a 24-year-old homeless man, had suffered from mental illness, and ended up taking his own life on June 10.
His body was found in a park near City Hall in Palmdale, a town north of Los Angeles with a population of about 150,000..
Marks mentioned Fuller’s three hospitalizations since 2017 where the young man told doctors he was thinking about committing suicide.
The most recent incident was in November, when he was being treated for depression at a hospital in Nevada and he “disclosed that he did have a plan to kill himself,” Marks said.
The Commander added that the Vegas Police were called out to an incident back in February when Fuller “allegedly tried to light himself on fire.”
Deputies who canvassed the scene reported that they found no evidence of a crime. The autopsy made a finding for suicide.
The suicide determination outraged Fuller’s family, who said authorities had been too quick to dismiss the possibility of a crime.
That’s understandable as the family is grieving their loss, but it’s also understandable that the man had serious mental issues and repeatedly told doctors he wanted to kill himself. Either way, it’s an awful mess for this poor family, and I hope they find peace.
The family hired a lawyer who declared that an independent autopsy would be performed, and the FBI and state Attorney General’s office vowed to monitor the investigation.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the findings of the investigation and the final determination of suicide had been shared with Fuller’s family, and so they were invited to attend the news conference but they were out of town at the time.

Jamon Hicks, the family lawyer, said he’ll hold a press conference later where he will make a statement.
