Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) said rising gun violence in Chicago is happening as a result of Chicago “being inundated with guns” from other states.
There are plenty of other states that have guns coming from surrounding states that do not have a gun violence problems up Chicago, commonly referred to as Chiraq.
During the first half of 2020, Chicago matched the homicide rates of 2016 – the city’s most violent year in almost two decades. There have been 329 homicides in Chicago from January to June, which is an increase of 34 percent from 2019. Based on the Chicago Police Department, there have been 1,384 shootings in the first half of the year, a rise of 42 percent from 2019. In the month of June alone, there had been 562 people shot, an 85 percent increase over last year’s totals for the same month.
“Sixty-three people were shot in the city this past weekend, and at least twelve people were killed,” the White House said in a statement last Wednesday. “Over the Fourth of July weekend, nearly 80 people were shot, and 17 were killed. Over Father’s Day weekend, 104 people were shot, and 15 were killed, including 5 young children. And the last weekend in May saw the city’s deadliest day on record: 18 murders in 24 hours.”
The children in Chicago who were shot and murdered recently include a 7-year-old girl, a 10-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, and a 20-month-old toddler. I bet any amount of money that most liberals bitching about Trump will not know any of their names.
How is this acceptable for Lori Lightfoot? Up to this point she has done nothing to stop children from being shot and killed in her city other than you offer up excuses, lay blame elsewhere, and offer more worthless gun control measures.
Last week, President Donald Trump announced Operation Legend, that will send federal law enforcement to “American communities plagued by violent crime.” Trump said federal assistance can be sent to Chicago and Albuquerque, with other cities added to the list “in the weeks ahead.”
“For this reason, today I am announcing that the Department of Justice will immediately surge federal law enforcement to the city of Chicago,” President Trump said. “The FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals Service, and Homeland Security will together be sending hundreds of skilled law enforcement officers to Chicago to help drive down violent crime.”
On Sunday, Lightfoot appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she talked about gun violence in her city.
“The fact of the matter is our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns in our streets — 60% of which come from states outside of Illinois,” Lightfoot told host Jake Tapper. “We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons.”
This is the most irresponsible statement I’ve ever heard from an elected official on gun violence under their jurisdiction. First off, she doesn’t understand that gun control laws create gun crimes. Police can’t be everywhere at all times, and so most crimes committed with a gun are when a cop is nowhere to be found. If criminals knew that their victims could possibly be carrying a concealed weapon, criminals would think twice before approaching them. It might not stop every criminal from approaching a victim, but it will act as a deterrent in most cases.
Earlier this month, Lightfoot blamed guns and the coronavirus pandemic for Chicago’s recent spike in violence.
“We have way too many guns on the streets,” Lightfoot said after being asked why Chicago is seeing a sharp increase in violent crimes. She also said the COVID-19 lockdowns created the “perfect storm” for an upswing in violence.
There was no coronavirus in 2016, and the shooting rates have just risen back to that past level, so how does she explain 2016? She’s just making things up.
“That is the thing that if the president really wanted to help, that and the other things I identified in my letter he could do today, tomorrow,” Lightfoot said of President Trump’s attempts to tackle violence. “But he’s not really interested in helping in that way.”
Because gun control laws are a disaster for law-abiding people.
Lightfoot reiterated that there can be no federal law enforcement agents within the city targeting protesters like in Portland.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, no troops, no agents that are coming in outside of our knowledge, notification and control that are violating people’s constitutional rights. That’s the framework,” Lightfoot said on Sunday. “We can’t just allow anyone to come into Chicago, play police in our streets and neighborhoods when they don’t know the first thing about our city. That’s a recipe for disaster.”
Lightfoot’s tenure as mayor of Chicago is a recipe for disaster. Federal agents have been fighting crime for over a hundred years, so they don’t need to know the city in order to do that. It also doesn’t matter what city federal property is in, working to protect that property, and the people working inside of it, is what federal law enforcement does.
“That’s what you’re seeing playing out in Portland on a nightly basis, we don’t need that here,” Lightfoot added. “That’s not a value add, it doesn’t help enhance our public safety.”
This is nothing more than Lightfoot trying to act like her city doesn’t need to help from federal agents to get her city under control. She is embarrassed that she has to admit she can’t control the city, and this kind of rhetoric is what she has to do to feel like she’s ion control. Well, here’s the dirty little secret. Federal agents do not need permission from anyone to go anywhere to enforce federal laws or to protect federal property.
I can remember when not that long ago American cattle rancher Cliven Bundy was accused to violating federal law over grazing lands for his herds. I remember Senate Majority Leader Democrat Harry Reid at the time saying that we can not have people violating federal law like this, and the same exact liberals today screaming about the Trump administration sending federal agents into cities to enforce federal laws, all cheered and celebrated when President Obama went after Bundy and his family. The Bundy family were protesting the federal government’s overreach back then, and leftists everywhere thought it was great that the feds enforced federal law. Now they’re saying things like they don’t want federal troops invading cities like Portland, Chicago or Minneapolis, and complaining that they don’t want an “occupation” in their cities.
I’ll never forget when Arizona governor Jan Brewer pointed her finger at Barack Obama complaining about how he was not doing his job to stop illegal aliens from coming into her state and threatening the lives of people in her cities and the Democrats and mainstream news media all said that Obama outranked Brewer and what he said goes. Now, they’re saying that mayors, forget the governors, but mayors have more authority over federal law than the president of the United States.
They are all of a bunch of hypocrites.
“Let me be clear, this is not about working with the Trump administration,” the Democratic mayor stressed. “For decades now in major cities across the country, FBI, DEA, AFT, those agents have been in our districts and do work and work in concert with local law enforcement to help support a number of efforts, not the least of which is violence in our cities.”
She’s trying to downplay the fact that Trump is moving in to do what she is incapable of doing by saying the president has nothing to do with the agents he’s sending to American cities where Democrat politicians are allowing their cities to burn. This woman is as pathetic as it gets. She’s in line with New York’s Bill de Blasio and Portland’s Ted Wheeler for worst mayor in America.
