The writings reveal his responsibility for her death, whose disappearance last year after they both set out on an excursion across the United States started a massive search for Petito from Utah to Florida, according to the FBI.
Petito’s disappearance in September 2021 got national headlines after Laundrie showed up at his parent’s house after coming home from their trip without Petito. Her body was then discovered at the Grand Teton National Park. A Wyoming medical examiner determined that the young woman died from “manual strangulation” at least 3 weeks prior to her remains being found.
A manhunt then began for Laundrie after his parents told law enforcement that he left their home to go hiking at T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve in Florida. His remains were discovered alongside a backpack, a notebook, and a handgun.
“Earlier today investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items such as a backpack and notebook belonging to Brian Laundrie,” Michael McPherson, the agent-in-charge of the FBI Tampa field office, said during a press conference at the scene.
“These items were found in an area that up until recently have been underwater,” McPherson said. “Our evidence response team is on scene, using all available forensic resources to process the area. It’s likely the team will be on scene for several days.”
The Denver office of the FBI released a statement on Friday making their final update on the investigation of the case of the murder of Gabby Petito.
The statement said that Laundrie confessed to Petito’s murder.
“Upon further search of the area, investigators found human remains later confirmed to be Mr. Laundrie, along with a backpack, notebook, and a revolver. A review of the notebook revealed written statements by Mr. Laundrie claiming responsibility for Ms. Petito’s death.”
The statement also said that after Laundrie killed Petito, he used her phone to send out text messages to make people believe she was still alive.
“After Ms. Petito’s death, there were several text messages identified between Mr. Laundrie’s telephone and Ms. Petito’s telephone. The timing and content of these messages are indicative of Mr. Laundrie attempting to deceive law enforcement by giving the impression that Ms. Petito was still alive.”
Richard Stafford, attorney for the Petito family, released a statement about the written confession.
“We truly appreciate the FBI’s diligent efforts in this extremely complicated case,” the family said. “The quality and quantity of the facts and information collected by the FBI leave no doubt Brian Laundrie murdered Gabby.”
Somewhere, Joy Reid, the race lady on MSNBC, was screaming into a pillow.
Brian Laundrie was never charged with Petito’s death, but he was a person of interest as law enforcement officials were searching for him. He had been charged with fraud when he used Petito’s debit card after he killed her.
The FBI said the statement concluded their investigation.
