Recently, FINA, the international water sports organization, created a new rule that transgender athletes are barred from competing in women’s categories.
Now, the International Rugby League (IRL) has announced that transgender women will no longer be allowed to play in international rugby league competitions.
According to the IRL, the ban is now in place until the issue has been examined and a definitive policy is created.
“Until further research is completed to enable the IRL to implement a formal transgender inclusion policy, male-to-female (transwomen) players are unable to play in sanctioned women’s international rugby league matches,” the IRL said in a statement.
“It is the IRL’s responsibility to balance the individual’s right to participate – a long-standing principle of rugby league and at its heart from the day it was established – against perceived risk to other participants, and to ensure all are given a fair hearing,” the statement said.
“The IRL will continue to work towards developing a set of criteria, based on best possible evidence, which fairly balance the individual’s right to play with the safety of all participants,” the statement read. “To help achieve this, the IRL will seek to work with the eight Women’s Rugby League World Cup 2021 finalists to obtain data to inform a future transwomen inclusion policy in 2023, which takes into consideration the unique characteristics of rugby league.”
The debate goes on about if biological males should be allowed to compete against biological females in women’s sporting events.
FINA said that one consideration is creating a new category for transgender athletes. I’d like to see if the number of transgender athletes goes down once that happens.
The International water sports federation said that transgender athletes may compete so long as they have completed their transition by age 12, according to the policy.
It sounds like so many people were angry that biological males were taking away the real achievements of female athletes and the fact that the argument against males being allowed to compete against females was so obvious that governing bodies are responding in ways to try to satisfy everyone by allowing women to have their sporting events back.
It’s about time.
