On Tuesday, a jury in a civil trial deliberated that Bill Cosby sexually abused a 16-year-old girl at the Playboy Mansion in 1975.
The victim, Judy Huth, now 64, was awarded $500,000 by the Los Angeles Country jury.
Incredibly, jurors found that Cosby reasonably believed Huth was under 18 years of age, intentionally caused harmful sexual contact, and that his conduct was driven by unnatural or sexually abnormal interest in a minor.
What a piece of crap.
This jury decision is a major loss for Coby, 84, who was once considered America’s dad. This case came almost a year after Cosby’s Pennsylvania criminal conviction for sexual assault was thrown out, causing his release from prison. The Huth lawsuit was one of the last out there after the entertainer’s insurer settled many other cases against his will.
Cosby never attended the trial and did not testify in person. The jury got to see short video clips from a 2015 deposition where he denied any sexual contact with Huth. To this day, he denies the allegation through his publicist and attorney.
The jury originally reached a verdict on almost every question, including if Cosby sexually abused Huth, and if she deserved damages on Friday after 2 days of deliberations. But then the foreperson couldn’t continue because of a personal commitment, so the jury had to begin deliberations all over again with an alternate juror.
The comedian’s lawyers stipulated that their client met Huth and her school friend in April of 1975 on a film set in Southern California and that he took them to the Playboy Mansion a few days later.
During the trial, photos of Cosby with Huth at the Masion taken by Huth’s friend and key witness Donna Samuelson, were shown larger than life for the jury.
Huth testified that in a bedroom that was next to a game room where she, Samuelson, and Cosby were hanging out, the entertainer tried to slip his hand down her pants, eventually exposing his member and forcing Huth to perform a sex act.
Huth filed a lawsuit back in 2014. She said during the time when a number of women started coming forward with accusations of Cosby doing similar things, her son turned 15, about the age she was when she went to the mansion and that brought back her trauma over what she had been through as a teenager.
Nathan Goldberg, Huth’s attorney, told the jury of 9 women and 3 men during closing arguments on Wednesday “my client deserves to have Mr. Cosby held accountable for what he did.”
“Each of you knows in your heart that Mr. Cosby sexually assaulted Miss Huth,” Goldberg said.
A majority of jurors ultimately agreed, and gave a verdict in Huth’s favor. The case took 8 years and a lot of hoops to jump through just to get it into a courtroom, but now it’s over and Cosby is being held accountable.
Cosby’s lawyer began her closing arguments saying, “It’s on like Donkey Kong,” and finished by declaring, “game over.”
Huth’s attorney became outraged during his rebuttal.
“This is about justice!” he shouted, slamming the podium. “We don’t need game over! We need justice!”
