As he started to discuss reforming the LAPD during his press conference, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called this an “urgent moment” for the city, “an inflection point.” Oh, boy.
He stated he’s “committed to making this moment not just a moment.” Translation: never let a good crisis go to waste.
Garcetti said he will be creating racial equality. “It is time to move our rhetoric towards action to end racism in our city.” This means he will write policies that will declare white people racist by default. How else can you create racist equality?
If there’s racism in your city, then it’s your fault, Mayor. You run the city. You are in charge of the police department.
This is so typical of Democrats. They get caught doing something, in this case creating policies that have harmed the black community, only to finally step up and declare that they, and only they, will fix the problem… that they caused in the first place.
He said the city should move beyond police reforms of the past. “Prejudice can never be part of police work…It takes bravery to save lives, too.”
No one disagrees with that. What people have a problem with is leftist politician’s personal definition of “prejudice.” It never quite matches to what’s found in Webster’s Dictionary.
“We will not be increasing our police budget,” he said. The amount targeted is about $1.8 billion within the mayor’s previously proposed budget.
The mayor talked about “reinvesting in black communities and communities of color.” This is what Democrats do all the time. They think throwing money at a problem will always make it go away.
He went on to say that there will be $250 million in cuts to the proposed budget and to reallocate the money to communities of color, “so we can invest in jobs, in education and healing.” L.A. Police Commission President Eileen Decker then announced that $100 million-$150 million of those cuts would come from the police department budget.
Black unemployment was at the lowest it’s ever been recorded thanks to the policies of President Donald Trump. Instead of taking tax dollars away from police to throw political windfalls at the same black communities they’ve destroyed through progressive Democrat policies, they should just reopen their economies by giving up the phony virus pandemic scare that ended a month ago.
This is just plain nuts. The L.A. Mayor just declared that all cops are racist. He is punishing all police officers on the force. I thought George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis?
The L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez, on Wednesday, introduced a motion to chop LAPD funding. She took to social media to make the announcement in a tweet:
“Today we introduced a motion to cut funding to the LAPD, as we reset our priorities in the wake of the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & the #BlackLivesMatter
call that we all support to end racism. This is just one small step. We cannot talk about change, we have to be about change.”

The mayor said he will give more details about where the money will go in his Thursday night press conference, and that the funding would be distributed “now, not years from now.”
I guess that means they won’t even give the police time to figure out how to keep Garcetti’s constituents safe with less money.
Garcetti additionally declared a moratorium on putting people in the gang data base, requiring police officers to always report bad actors and increasing discipline towards officers who break the rules.
Why would any cop in their right mind put up with this? Where are the police unions on this? You will probably see a mass exit of cops from the force because you have to be crazy to put your life on the line with politicians throwing you under the bus this way.
“We need to move toward a guardian-based system,” the mayor said, “by developing long term relationships between our youth and police officers.” Liberal pablum like this never works out in the real world.
Garcetti announced a Civil and Human Rights Commission that can have its first meeting next week, with a vow to have it ready for duty by July 1. In that department will reside an Office of Racial Equity to help the city “apply and equity lens to everything we do.” What could possibly go wrong?
“We can’t walk to the promised land in a single day,’ Garcetti said, “but this is a start.”
