California deputies held three black teenagers at gunpoint after they had been allegedly attacked by a man with a knife, video shows.
Tammi Collins, the mother of one of the teenagers, released footage on Saturday of two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies pointing weapons in Santa Clarita Valley at the victims, who were off-camera.
Collins said her son and his friends had been at a bus stop when they were attacked by a homeless man who asked them for drugs, then pulled a knife on them, CBS LA reported.
Bystanders called 911 to get help for them, only to have three responding officers to draw weapons on the boys, Collins said.
In the video, a number of the bystanders pleaded with the deputies to drop the weapons.
“Put the guns down. They’re just kids,” one of the bystanders is heard saying.
“They don’t care because they’re black. They didn’t do nothing at all.”
It sucks that we live in a day and age where crime is so bad in certain cities that police have to take precautions against everyone at a crime scene until they get all involved situated. It’s not good for the teenagers who had to have guns pointed at them, and it’s not good for the police to have to be that way given today’s environment.
With that said, how were the deputies supposed to know that the teens weren’t somehow involved and not just victims? Yes, a phone call was made about the incident, but people lie all the time when calling the police. Some folks tell their side of the story, and it may not be the whole story. They may leave out that the people they’re siding with have a weapon on them. Cops don’t know, and the only way to find out is by treating everyone the same until the situation is analyzed.
People don’t walk around with “I’m a nice guy” tattooed to their foreheads. If they did, a cop’s job would be so much easier.
When police arrive on a scene from a call they have to take everyone into account who is involved at the beginning of their encounter. They are trained to make sure that everyone who is possibly involved is not a threat to them, anyone else at the scene, or even the victims. Once they secure the scene, then they sort things out. I’m not saying they would, but how do the deputies know one of the teens didn’t pull out a weapon and try to use it on the homeless man? They don’t, which is why they have to evaluate the situation first, and that starts by securing everyone.
Again, it’s horrible that these innocent teens had to be treated this way, but try to remember that cops have no way of knowing who is good, bad, or what when they arrive on a scene. People die when they don’t take these kinds of precautions after a call is made involving a weapon.
A woman approached the deputies and identified herself as the manager of a Buffalo Wild Wings nearby and asked the them to “please talk to someone.”
“I am the one that called you. It was not them,” she said.
On Monday, Alex Villanueva, the Los Angeles County Sheriff, said he has seen the video and the matter is under investigation.
“I have some concerns about the tactics involved,” Villanueva said in a video posted to Twitter.
