There is a transgender woman who is living in Ukraine and wants to leave the country during the Russian invasion, but this person’s passport, says Zi Faámelu is a male. That’s because he is a biological male wearing women’s clothing. The 31-year-old told CBS News that “there’s no way Ukrainian border people can let me through. There’s no way.”
This person suffers from a mental illness (dysphoria) and is used to being placated by a polite society. The rule is men cannot leave the country because they may need them to fight the Russians if it comes to that. There are other men in the country who are not transgender and also want to leave but they cannot. What makes Faámelu special? It seems like Faámelu is not seeking not equal rights but special rights.
I’m sorry if I’m coming off less than sympathetic, but how far are we willing to go to allow these people to alter our society just so that we don’t have to go through the uncomfortable motions to get them face the reality that they’re not well? The first thing we think of is they’re not bothering anyone and they seem really nice, but that’s not the case when they demand that the rest of society has to change for their benefit when what they believe is clearly not accurate. And in this case, the Ukrainian government is not going to budget. We’re talking life and death of their society is at stake. Blame Putin, not the Ukrainian government.
Faámelu can call himself a woman in society and no one is going to stop him, but when you start demanding special treatment during an invasion, so that you can get out while other biological males cannot, it just comes off like you’re trying to scam the system.
Last week, the Ukraine State Border Guard Service announced that males ages 18 to 60 are barred from leaving the country. Faámelu might have problems getting into a neighboring country anyway because of the discrepancy Faámelu’s legal sex and what she claims to be, LBGTQNation said.
“This is not a very rainbow-friendly place. … Lives for trans people are very bleak here,” Faámelu said to CBS News. “If you have a male gender in your passport, they will not let you go abroad. They will not let you through.”
The network said that even though the LGBTQ community has become more accepted as years went by; they believe it is more complex for transgender people.
LBGTQNation pointed out that it isn’t easy for transgender people in Ukraine to get their passports updated. They have to go through psychiatric evaluation and/or gender-affirming surgery to get the documents legally changed.
“I don’t want to go through that. This is like, humiliating for the world…. I decided to keep my passport, keep male in my passport, and now I cannot leave this country,” Faámelu said to CBS News. “[It’s] a war within a war, truly.” Not really.
By his own admission, he doesn’t want to go through the gender affirmation surgery or psychiatric evaluation, so he is saying that while he calls himself female, he’s not willing to go the whole 9 yards, which tells me his heart is really in it. At least not enough to be able to leave the country while it’s getting invaded.
I’m sorry. Faámelu is probably a fabulous person, but as far as government policies go, not every country will bend to the will of people who suffer from a mental disorder.
“A few hours ago I heard bombings and my windows were shaking. … I’m literally scared for my life,” Faámelu told CBS News. Then put on men’s clothes, claim you’re a dude, and leave the country to avoid being killed. Simple.
Faámelu told CBS that transphobia is the norm in the city and in neighboring countries, and is afraid that if he tries to leave, it will increase the chances he’ll meet with violence. It isn’t transphobia that’s not letting him leave. It’s the fact that he is a biological male.
