Michael Cohen’s lawyer told Fox News that his client was taken back into custody on Thursday and is now at the Metro Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Cohen, the former personal lawyer for Donald Trump, who was imprisoned last year after pleading guilty to several charges, some of which weren’t even crimes thanks to his incompetent lawyer Lanny Davis, was released from an upstate New York federal prison in May because of concerns over Chinese pandemic virus.
Cohen’s lawyer Jeffrey Levine said that Cohen had been negotiating on terms for home confinement with an ankle bracelet.
He even traveled to the offices of federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York to “discuss terms and conditions” of federal monitoring.
Cohen refused to agree to the first term of the home confinement deal, which would have barred him from speaking to the news media and stopped him from publishing a tell-all book that he’s been writing while behind bars in an upstate New York federal prison.
When he refused to sign, he thought he somehow had leverage or was negotiating with the government, and that’s when federal authorities left the room only to return an hour and a half later with the marshals carrying shackles.
I’m willing to bet that Davis put him up to arguing with the feds. He spoke with Levine afterward.
Davis said that when the marshals came out of an elevator, Levine, turned to Cohen and said: “I hope they’re not here for you.”
“The next thing that happened was the Marshals said they had an order signed by someone from the Bureau of Prisons. The order was to arrest him and put him in jail, and they started to put shackles on him,” Davis said.
Levine said that instead of finishing the discussions, parole officials told Cohen and Levine that the conversation was over.
“Michael reacted very quickly and said, ‘I’ll sign exactly what you want me to sign, so I don’t have to go back to jail,’ ” Davis said.
“The comment from one of the three Marshals, was: ‘It’s out of our hands,’ ” he added.
There were reports that Cohen was spotted in a restaurant in Manhattan, which made officials believe that he was in violation of his home confinement terms. Levine didn’t say whether or not it’s connected to his client going back to prison.
“Today, Michael Cohen refused the conditions of his home confinement and as a result, has been returned to a facility,” officials said in a brief statement.
Cohen was held at a prison camp in Otisville, New York, as he was serving a three-year sentence after pleading guilty to coordinating payoffs to buy the silence of adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
Neither of those things is illegal because nondisclosure agreements are done all the time.
Cohen was also disbarred and was set for release in November 2021.
