To prove we are evermore living in a 1984 world, the social media giant Twitter, specifically the Twitter Engineering Department, has just announced they are advancing a change to the language they will use from now on just like the Soviets did right after the Bolshevik Revolution.
This is being done for showmanship because no one would ever see the codes they use behind the scenes when doing engineering work.
“Inclusive language plays a critical role in fostering an environment where everyone belongs. At Twitter, the language we have been using in our code does not reflect our values as a company or represent the people we serve. We want to change that. #WordsMatter”
Twitter has now joined the Valley of Madness by creating a starting list of words they will no longer use, and the substituted words following. In no time at all, users will more-than-likely be punished on the social media site for using the wrong words.
It will be kinda like, “IT’S MAM!!!!”
So far they have listed words like Whitelist, which will now be called Allowlist. Blacklist will be Denylist (I’m waiting for a wokety-woke-woke to come along and complain that the black list connotes something negative while the white list stands for something positive. I haven’t heard that yet, but it’s still early).
Master/Slave, which are terms used in hard drives and other engineering and electronics-speak, will be called Leader/Follower, Primary/Replica, or Primary/Standby.
Man Hours will be Person Hours or Engineer Hours.
Dummy Value will now be known as Placeholder Value, or Sample Value. Personally, I think it should be known as Twitter Engineering Value.
I’m sorry, but if any of these words that are part of the English language truly offend you, then you have much bigger psychological problems than getting triggered by words.
We’re starting with a set of words we want to move away from using in favor of more inclusive language, such as: pic.twitter.com/6SMGd9celn

They followed up with a tweet, which is a mandatory disclaimer in the new woke world, saying:
“There is no switch we can flip to make these changes everywhere, at once. We will continue to iterate on this work and want to put in place processes and systems that will allow us to apply these changes at scale. We’re focusing on these areas”

1. Migrating source code and changing configuration by going through our existing code, IDing violating terms with new warning tools, and changing to the new inclusive terminology. Automated tools and linters are being developed in order to minimize manual effort for developers.

2. Updating documentation across internal resources, Google Docs, runbooks, FAQs, readmes, technical design docs, and more. We are also implementing a browser extension that will help our teams identify words in documents and web pages, and suggest alternative inclusive words.

This isn't just about eng terms or code. Words matter in our meetings, our conversations, and the documents we write. We know there’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re committed to doing our part. #UntilWeAllBelong

1984 was supposed to be a warning. It was not offered as a user’s manual.
