According to what a US official told the UN Security Council, there is now credible evidence from the Donetsk region revealing Russian troops executing Ukrainians who were trying to surrender.
On Wednesday, Beth Van Schaack, the US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, addressed the members of the council during a meeting concerning accountability in Ukraine.
“We now have credible information that a Russian military unit operating in the vicinity of Donetsk executed Ukrainians who were attempting to surrender, rather than take them into custody,” Van Schaack advised the council.
Van Schaack continued. “If true, this would be in violation of a core principle of the law of war: the prohibition against the summary execution of civilians and of combatants who are hors de combat by virtue of surrender, injury, or other forms of incapacitation.”
The Ambassador added that evidence collected, which included photos, indicates that the inhumanities are “not the result of rogue units or individuals; they rather reveal a deeply disturbing pattern of systematic abuse across all areas where Russia’s forces are engaged.”
“Our simple message to Russia’s military and political leadership and to the rank-and-file is this: the world is watching, and you will be held accountable,” Van Schaack warned.
Russia has been accused of war crimes since the day they invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine on February 24. Their crimes include kidnapping children, targeting civilians, rape, and torture.
A lawyer who is running an operation to gather evidence to prosecute Russia for war crimes said that Russian troops have “tacit permission” to rape civilians.
On Friday, the UN’s Human Rights office highlighted what it declared is growing evidence of war crimes since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, noting that humanitarian law seems to have been “tossed aside.”
Russia has been putting its efforts in the Donetsk region, since their military failed to take the capital city of Kyiv.
The US has already labeled Russia’s activities a “genocide” and has carried out dozens of sanctions to target Russia’s economy in an attempt to stifle their invasion. We have also given billions of dollars in military support to Ukraine.
After two months of war, five million Ukrainians fled the country, with millions more displaced internally because of the fighting.
It has been reported that Russia is shooting at trucks and workers who are helping civilians, making humanitarian aid difficult to deliver.
Russia has denied it has committed war crime and continues to characterize the invasion as a “special military operation” aimed at liberating Ukraine. Liberating Ukraine from what?
Amal Clooney, a human rights attorney, urged the UN on Wednesday, to focus their attentions on international justice for war crimes in Ukraine.
“Ukraine is today a slaughterhouse. Right in the heart of Europe,” Clooney told the UN Security Council meeting.
