Gusion GPS thought they had it all figured out. They could help defeat Donald Trump in 2016 by falsely accusing him of laundering money through Alpha Bank.
They knew it would be nearly impossible for Trump to sue them over the obvious lie. What they didn’t count on was being sued by Alpha Bank.
But sued they were and after failing to get the case thrown out, they are now facing disclosure and Alpha wants all of their communications having to do with the claim of money laundering.
This has thrown Fusion GPS into a panic. In the dossier, Fusion accused Alpha Bank of “bribery, extortion, and interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.” None of it was true.
The accusation was that Alpha Bank was laundering money Putin was paying Trump to act as their agent. Alpha Bank wants to know where the story came from and everybody Fusion passed this false information off to.
That story quickly fell apart when not only was it accused of being a lie, it was proven to be a lie. Now, they have wide latitude to request information that Fusion must turn over to Alpha’s lawyers.
There turned out to be no factual content in the accusation at all and obviously, the Clinton campaign figured after the election, it would all fade away.
But with the election of Trump, they were not able to cover up their crimes. They also mismeasured the response to their lies as far as Alpha Bank was concerned.
Banks must be like Caesar’s wife, beyond reproach. And there was money to be had from the lawsuit as well. That would cover the costs of their suit.
Even oppo research stories require some minimal factual content, and this story lacked the bare minimum. Apparently, the Clinton campaign thought the whole thing would be water over the dam, but Alfa bank had other ideas. They sued, and Techno Fog brings us up to date:
We previously reported that Alfa Bank filed a motion to compel, asking the Court to require Fusion GPS and Glenn Simpson to produce documents withheld as privileged. These documents included communications with Glenn Simpson and others concerning the false Alfa Bank allegations.
[W]hy would the Fusion GPS attorney violate the rules of conduct — and risk sanctions by the Court?
We have a feeling that Fusion GPS (or its attorneys… or both) are feeling the heat. There are nearly 500 critically important documents that Fusion GPS has allegedly improperly kept from the other side.
