In a random act of journalism, Jake Tapper took the fight to Sen Richard Blumenthal on his assertion that the filibuster needs to be done away with because Republicans abuse it. Tapper then correctly pointed out that Democrats used it too. But, he did not bring up the actual counts. John Roberts of Fox news tallied it up and over the past year, Republicans have used the filibuster just one time on the Democrat’s bill to allow election fraud. On the other hand, Democrats have used the filibuster 300 times.
Blumenthal claimed that billionaires are deciding elections and he is right although he did not name any. Let me assist him. George Soros, Laurene Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter, Google, etc etc. But, I do understand where Blummie is coming from. His party cannot legislate communist policies if they have to get 60 votes to do it. But, who is right? The best way to tell will be the results of next year’s election.
But, Blummie never explained why 300 filibusters were not an obstruction but the one by Republicans will cause democracy to collapse. I guess that he was expecting Jake Tapper to be his usual self and let his lies fly by without notice. Throughout the interview, Blumenthal kept insisting that dark money was behind the Republican votes.
Liberal “dark money” groups, which obscure the source of their funds, outspent conservative ones for the first time in 2018. Even reform hawks like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders had their own personal big-money groups supporting their presidential campaigns.
“Senator, haven’t you voted in favor of filibustering Republican legislation, not allowing them to even proceed to a discussion, an amendment process, and debate on a bill?” Tapper asked.
“We have used the 60-vote threshold a number of times,” Blumenthal replied.
“You’re talking about it being corrupt, but you’ve used it, too,” Tapper pushed back.
“The dark money is corrupt. The current finance system and its corruption is what we want to end,” Blumenthal continued. “The filibuster is a rule that stymies majority vote.”
Blumenthal went on to argue that the founding fathers would have “absolutely rejected” the filibuster, claiming that Republicans “overuse, abuse, and misuse” it so often that many Democrats were ready to scrap it.
If the Founding Fathers were alive today and they saw the Democratic agenda, they would have approved of the filibuster. It is a check against raw power which they had fought so hard against.
