An administrator of a school says they must teach the opposing side to the Holocaust due to a Texas law that requires teachers to instruct on both sides of a controversial subject.
What is the other side of a mass execution? Genocide is okay because it happened to those dirty Jews. Who is the administrator? Eva Braun?
Parents, students, and teachers packed the Carroll Independent School District’s board meeting on Monday night to express their anger after the announcement.
I’m not Jewish, but my wife and son were, so maybe I’m a little thin-skinned on the subject, but I just don’t see that there are two sides to genocide. That makes no sense to me. I notice she did not say the same thing about slavery, another topic, I do not see two sides of. That tells me where her politics lie.
NBC News obtained a recording of Gina Peddy, the district’s executive director of curriculum and instruction. In it, she said, “Make sure that if you have a book on the Holocaust that you have one that has an opposing — that has other perspectives.”
Peddy was addressing requirements of newly passed HB 3979, which requires the teaching of both sides of a controversial or social subject, but neither slavery nor the Holocaust is controversial. There is no other justifiable side with either one.
District Superintendent Lane Ledbetter apologized last week after Peddy’s remarks. He made it clear that he could not see two sides to the issue.
More than 50 speakers addressed the school board Monday, the network said.
Jake Berman — who is Jewish and a former student — said he contemplated suicide over anti-Semitic bullying he endured when he attended school, after which his parents pulled him out, NBC News said.
“I received everything from jokes about my nose to gas chambers, all while studying for my bar mitzvah,” Berman said, according to the network. He added that Peddy’s words spotlight the problem with new laws that limit how teachers talk about racism and other controversial subjects.
NBC News reported: “The facts are that there are not two sides of the Holocaust. The Nazis systematically killed millions of people. There are not two sides of slavery. White Europeans enslaved black Africans in this country until June 19, 1865, a moment we’re barely 150 years removed from.”
My apologies to NBC, but I consider 156 years to be a long time, although I agree it should never have existed.
